Event Goal

To provide an engaging, interactive, on-line opportunity for young women in STEM and their allies to problem-solve, collaborate with mentors and industry professionals, develop skills and open minds to new opportunities.

About the Girls and Allies in FIRST STEMathon

Join us ONLINE on March 20th and 21st for the FIRST Canada STEMathon – 2021! Teams of four to five students will work together to solve a real-world problem (THEME to be announced the day of the event). Enjoy 24 hours of showcasing your STEM skills and teamwork with the FIRST Canada community! Launching at 9:00 AM  on Saturday, March 20th and wrapping up at 4 PM on Sunday, March 21st, the event features a weekend of problem-solving, informative and engaging workshops, and a lot of fun for everyone!

Hosted by Karthik Kanagasabapathy and the FIRST Canada Youth Council, who will facilitate a weekend full of inspiration, project presentations, yoga, and scavenger hunts. The teams will be matched and guided by FIRST Canada mentors and volunteers who will provide insight and tips for participants, and most of all, cheer on their team to new heights! There will also be some great presentations, contests and awesome prizes. Thank you all for your interest in the STEMathon!

    Welcome to the second annual FIRST Canada Girls and Allies STEMathon. We are looking forward to another amazing weekend starting from Saturday, March 20th, 2021 at 9:00 AM (EDT) and running through to Sunday, March 21st, at 4:00 PM (EDT).     What is a STEMathon?

    A STEMathon, similar to a hackathon, allows students to problem-solve and create an innovative solution through the application of STEM.  The FIRST Canada STEMathon – Girls and Allies 2021, features a weekend of problem-solving, informative and engaging workshops, and a lot of fun for girls and allies in FIRST! Teams of four to five students (from FRC or FTC programs) will work together, while being guided by mentors, to solve a real-world problem, based on the theme which will be announced on the day of the event.

    When will the STEMathon Take Place?

    The FIRST Canada STEMathon – Girls and Allies 2021, will be occurring from March 20, 2021, to March 21st, 2021, with registration open at 9:00 AM, and closing ceremony ending at 4:00 PM on the 21st of March, 2021. 

    Where will it be happening?

    This event will take place ONLINE.  A link will be sent out to all participants where they can view the opening and closing ceremonies, along with many activities happening through the 24 hours. All communication during the remainder of the event will be done through Slack.

    Do I need a team to register?

    Participants can register for the STEMathon as a team of four or five. However, participants do not need to sign up with a team to compete! Individual attendees will be matched with a team that they can work with during the event.

    Can I register if I am at University?

    Sadly the STEMathon is only open to current students from Grade 7 – Grade 12 and not University students.

    What is an Ally?

    In the context of the STEmathon, “ally” refers to the opportunity for young girls, other students and mentors to connect and support each other while they collaborate, problem solve and open their minds to new opportunities.
