Learn – Ontario Curriculum Connections

FIRST Robotics Canada programs are designed for students interested in building their technical knowledge and skills. We offer elementary and secondary courses to achieve curriculum-based learning objectives in an engaging, inquiry-based, and experiential way. These online, at-home activities offer quick and easy learning resources for students from grade 4 to grade 12.

ELEMENTARY

FIRST Robotics Canada, in partnership with Logics Academy, is pleased to offer courses to achieve curriculum-based learning objectives in an engaging, inquiry-based and experiential way. This method of delivery improves engagement, retention and a deeper understanding of core mathematics, science and language knowledge and skills. Through this course, a student can progress with no background in coding and robotics to confidently participate in FIRST Lego League.

The LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robotics platform is a great tool that allows students to demonstrate and apply their understanding of curriculum concepts while gaining valuable coding skills that will prepare them for the future. Through this course, students will gain experiences that relate to mathematics and science curriculum objectives that they can draw upon throughout the year. The curriculum-based objectives in each lesson have a common mathematics thread and specific lessons also touch on many core science and language learning objectives. An activity sheet guides the students through the investigation and asks them thoughtful questions about their learning journey. All resources are provided for lesson delivery, including lesson plans, building instructions and student activity sheets.

 In addition to the LEGO EV3 educational kit and software, you will need a few common items such as chart paper, markers, masking tape, electrical tape, elastics, string, and scissors. Those without access to a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Core Set can complete the activities using LEGO Digital Designer in conjunction with the Virtual Robotics Toolkit to design, build and test virtual creations (available FREE at this link). These at-home activities offer quick and easy access to virtual learning activities for students in grades 4 – 8 that have a focus on mathematics and science, including measurement, number sense & numeration and structures & mechanisms. Through various challenges, worksheets and other home learning activities, students can be both engaged and educated (at the same time as keeping them indoors).   • Beginner/Intermediate – Scratch – a block-based visual programming language similar to Spike Prime and FIRST Tech Challenge languages – Code interactive stories, animations, and games.
  • Beginner/Intermediate – Hour of Code – a variety of tutorials in Python, Java, JavaScript, C++, Block Based.
  • Intermediate/Advanced – Machine learning Projects – Explore innovative topics and do projects or hands on challenges.
  • Ages 11+ Autodesk – Learn, apply and practice using industry recognized tools. Software is free for students and educators. Support for distance learning and self-paced training for students with the design academy.
  • Ages 7 + Autodesk Tinkercad – Create, design, and make or code, animate and 3D print a design. Start with the getting started lessons, teachers and coaches – create a class and set activities for your students

SECONDARY

Microsoft Team of the Week, Pink Titans, team membersFIRST Robotics Canada in partnership with subject organizations and secondary school teachers along with Ontario Council for Technology Education (OCTE) is pleased to offer students and teachers a variety of course teaching and learning tools. The FIRST Robotics learning experience provides multiple avenues for students to develop skills that support their learning. Students who engage in FIRST programs are more likely to go into STEM related careers.

Technological education curriculum and activities build on the foundation of knowledge and skills provided by the elementary science and technology curriculum, particularly in its Understanding Structures and Mechanisms strand. Participating in the learning activities and curriculum found here enables students to develop knowledge and skills related to design, process planning, control systems, and robotics systems and controls.  Students will deepen their understanding of a broad range of tools and equipment, modern manufacturing techniques and processes as they develop critical decision-making, problem-solving, and project-management skills.
