GSL Group CEO, Graham Lee, first met Dean Kamen, the founder of FIRST Robotics, in 2014 on an XPRIZE trip, where they immediately bonded in their passion for science and innovation, particularly in promoting the development of artificial intelligence, robotics and technology.

Given the natural alignment of this unique robotics competition with GSL Group’s strategic focus on innovation, technology and community, Graham Lee was determined to bring the competition home as a catalyst to fostering innovation in Western Canada.

The initiative brings students together from across Western Canada, inspiring their pursuit for science, engineering, technology and robotics, as they engage in competitions that also develop their skills in problem solving, innovation, teamwork, ideation and scientific thinking.

GSL Group

As the Provincial Platinum Sponsor, GSL Group will host this inaugural event at its own Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria, drawing students from all over BC and Alberta, with international teams coming from as far as Mexico for this exciting robotics competition. This is a unique opportunity for high school students excited about innovation, technology and robotics to gather together and pursue their passion in this very important industry sector.

The following is a video clip filmed on the day Dean Kamen and Graham Lee came together to begin this initiative.

Thank you to Microsoft Canada for their generous support of this competition.

In order to make it easier for teams to find accommodation at a reasonable price, FIRST uses Experient to book hotel blocks for teams. You can find more information on this at the link

NOTE: There is a comic convention in Victoria over the weekend after the regional, so please book early to minimize any issues that may arise from having this second event in the city. This is especially important for teams staying the Friday night in Victoria before travelling home.

For anyone travelling from the mainland Canada or the U.S.,  ferries will be needed to get to the event. Below are the websites for the Canadian and American options for ferries. Please ensure you book ahead, especially if you are travelling with multiple vehicles, a bus or a trailer with equipment. It is also important that you plan early for any issues resulting from weather that may affect ferry schedules.
