Thank you to Microsoft for supporting FIRST Robotics Competition. This week we talked to team 6875, Build a Dream Robotics—Amazon Warriors, a community team from LaSalle, Ontario, a Microsoft-sponsored-team.
1. What makes your team unique?
Team 6875: This is a very exciting time for our team as it is our rookie season. We are very excited to be a part of the program especially as the first all-girls’ team in the Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent area. In addition, our team has all female mentors, as well as team members. We are very excited to be representing women and showing what we can do at our competitions this year. We have also already done some community outreach with other teams in our area to get our name known and even been highlighted in an article in the Windsor Star, a local news outlet.
2. What competitions will your team be attending this season?
Team 6875: Our team will be attending the Windsor Essex Great Lakes District Event as well as the Waterloo District Event. We feel prepared for these competitions as in October 2017 we attended the Southwest International Off-Season Event and borrowed our founding team, Sabre Bytes Team 772’s, extra robot to compete. We even received the Best Rookie Award at the event.
3. What are your team’s strengths and challenges?
Team 6875: Our team’s collaborative skills as well as team organization are both very strong and established. We set tasks and goals clearly and each team member is committed to achieving those goals together. Our team is comprised of a group of driven young ladies who are interested in STEM. Our team, though young, is set on having a successful season, and we are ready to work hard to achieve our goals. Some of the challenges we face are the lack of team experience. Several of our members have little experience beyond being involved with FIRST LEGO League. Our experienced technical mentors have done a great job in the off season of preparing and teaching us the skills we need for the build season.
4. How has the Microsoft grant helped your team?
Team 6875: The Microsoft grant has already given the team a giant push towards success. Thanks to the grant, the team was able to use its resources to acquire tools, pit materials, and a laptop. This is propelling us towards success, as the team can now focus on building technical skills and working to set up for a successful season.
Thanks, Team 6875! We wish you the best of luck on your rookie season and we look forward to seeing your team grow over the years to come. Keep up the great work!
