![]() Women in Engineering at the 2006 Greater Toronto Regional competition: FIRST increases awareness in science and technology careers, emphasizing under-represented segments. ![]() FIRST Robotics Canada (formerly known as Canadian Association for Student Robotics) was established in 2001 to meet the growing need for student robotics programs in Canada. FIRST Robotics Canada initially established a high school robotics program allowing teams from across Canada to compete annually in Toronto. Highly successful competitions have taken place in Toronto since 2002, and in 2005 an additional competition was added at the University of Waterloo. In connection with these events, FIRST Robotics Canada carries out team recruitment and support, competition and non-competition event planning, sponsorship coordination and fundraising. It runs training sessions and arranges for ongoing team mentoring by industry representatives throughout the year. It also recruits a wide range of the 140 volunteers required in running the events. FIRST Robotics Canada was the proud recipient of the Yves Landry High School Technical Career Awareness Award. The Yves Landry awards were established to advance technological education and skills training in order to resolve the skilled labour shortages facing Canadian industries. The Career Awareness award is for an organization that best promotes to students and parents the career opportunities in a technical field. The winning program provides teachers and guidance counsellors with curriculum based information on growth industries, salaries, the importance of math, science, technology and languages in the global economy, and represents in a balanced manner, the advantages of all post-secondary technical training options.
