Invest Barrie and the Barrie Public Library are proud to present the Lego Robotics program.

On Oct. 1 the Lego Robotics program was officially launched at the Barrie Public Library in conjunction with Invest Barrie. This program is designed to help individuals aged 6-14 gain experience with STEM. The launch was very successful and over 20 kids registered for the ongoing workshops. The scene at the Barrie Public Library was incredible, with individuals of all ages enjoying different displays and technologies. Enthusiastic kids were easy to find asking questions, interacting with different technologies, and all around having a great time.

IMG_3674Attendees of Lego Robotics workshops will be exposed to various elements of STEM education and by the end of the workshop will complete their own version of a robotic design put together by the Cybergnomes. Al Davis, CEO of the Barrie Public Library stated “It’s time to start investing in the future of Barrie and this is a great way to do so.”

Guests were joined by the Cybergnomes and Classy Cyborgs, two of Canada’s premier robotics teams. Both teams put on an exhilarating display of their creations.

The Classy Cyborgs are a team of boys and girls (aged 11-14) from Aurora, Ontario that aim to help visually impaired children to learn braille with technology. The Classy Cyborgs gave a moving presentation on how they plan to improve the lack of technology based educational options for visually impaired children. Along this journey the Cyborgs created the treasure box braille, which will help teach the braille alphabet. The Classy Cyborgs have the pleasure of working with successful organizations such as VentureLab, Perkins School for the Blind, Deloitte, and York University.

Cybergnomes in turn are the only robotics team based out of Simcoe County. Cybergnomes are a combination of high school students and will be a continuous part of the Lego Robotics program. The Cybergnomes gave a presentation of one of their creations.

The eventful evening culminated with strong words from Mayor Jeff Lehman, who stressed the importance of STEM programs at an early age and also the importance of dedicating resources to ensure we inspire the leaders of tomorrow for the City of Barrie. This is a sentiment that was restated from many in attendance and it is clear that these types of programs will be a staple in Barrie.
