A GLOBAL ROBOTICS COMMUNITY PREPARING YOUNG PEOPLE FOR THE FUTURE

About FIRST Canada

FIRST® inspires young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

Mission and Values

The mission of FIRST® is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISM™

We instill this value at every opportunity. We expect, require and reward on-field and off-field conduct that models the best values of professional respect and courtesy.

INDIRECT LEARNING

Our mission is to inspire, not to formally educate, but participation in one of our events involves the application of a remarkable range of creative and analytical skills, as well as the development of valuable social intelligence skills.

COOPERTITION®

Our programs are designed so that to succeed, teams must be able to cooperate with other teams as well as compete with other teams. This is an important real world skill.

RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND VOLUNTEERISM

Participating students fully reflect the diversity of contemporary Ontario society. Our program is volunteer led and volunteer delivered.

Programs

FIRST® LEGO® League introduces STEM to children ages 4-14 through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided, global robotics program, helping today’s students and teachers build a better future together. The three divisions inspire youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics.

FIRST® Tech Challenge students learn to think like engineers. Teams design, build, and program robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are built from a reusable platform, powered by android technology, and can be coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming.

FIRST® Robotics Competition teams design, program, and build a robot starting with a standard kit of parts and common set of rules to play in a themed head-to-head challenge. Teams also build a brand, develop community partnerships for support, and work to promote STEM in their local community.

The FIRST Impact

As we work as a community to prepare young people for a STEM future, FIRST aims to ensure its programs are having a lasting, positive impact on all participants.

Governance

Our mission is to inspire young people to pursue further studies and careers in STEM, and we achieve that with the invaluable vision, guidance, and support from our Board of Directors, Executive Advisory Board, and our Girls in STEM Advisory Council.

Board of Directors

The FIRST Robotics Canada Board of Directors advance the organization’s strategic objectives, collaborating with the FIRST community and the staff team to continue expanding FIRST programs to make hands-on learning opportunities available to even more students in Canada – especially in underserved and underrepresented communities.

Executive Advisory Board

The FIRST Robotics Canada Executive Advisory Board is made up of a cross-section of individuals from business, industry, academia, and sciences whose role it is to provide advice, work on special projects, and interact directly with FIRST Canada staff and the Board of Directors.

Girls in STEM Advisory Council

The Girls in STEM Executive Advisory Council offers us insight and oversight that will help break down the barriers of girls in STEM, encourage girls and young women to become innovative and successful leaders of the future, and build the foundation for systematic change for acceptance and inclusion of girls in STEM.
